1948 (Circa) Gibson J45 Cherry Sun Burst
***SOLD***
Just like the red headed girls are always the most fun, so is this cherry sunburst vintage Gibson J-45, likely 1948 ish but with a late 50’s or early 60s replaced top. The sides, back and neck are certainly from the 40’s. We don’t know the history, but it would be interesting. Our opinion is this is a 40’s guitar that was re-topped in the late 50’s by Gibson.
The neck width is 1-11/16” at the nut, and the feel is fairly beefy. Peg head has that cool taper like a 40’s J45. Sides are not laminated but solid mahogany and have side strapping like a 40’s J45. The serial number is 7117H, which could possibly be an old factory order number? The cherry sunburst is dark and typical of late fifties to early sixties.
Professional neck reset is absolutely first class and it ought to be, the guitar belongs to my luthier David Hatchard. Action at 3-2 with proper string break across the saddle. Playability is excellent.
Her voice is simply wonderful!! New bone nut and compensated bone saddle, and the bridge is original. Frets are all original and in excellent shape. There are some non noticeable well repaired hairline cracks on the bottom side of the lower bout. Looks like the work was also done by Gibson when the new top was put on. There is a non noticeable and well repaired sound hole crack. Other than that the top and back are crack free. Braces are tight. A few other light scrapes and dings but overall a very clean example.
Blue plush interior hard case. Every bit as cool as Brad Paisley’s but built almost 30 years before he was even born!!
