1964 Gibson – Epiphone FT79 “Texan”
The venerable Epiphone FT-79 Texan model flat top acoustic guitar, made in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1964. What a musical instrument! Sir Paul certainly knew what he was doing when he bought his 1964 Texan just down the street from the Ed Sullivan Theater the week of The Beatles first shows in the US.
But oh, there is so much more to these iconic guitars.
This gorgeous faded shade top example represents my exposure to years of experience collecting “Texans” by my friend, luthier David Hatchard of New Hampshire. Dave managed to acquire 8 extremely fine sounding examples over quite a long period of time. For years I owned one of his “shop guitars” and everyone played it. Alas, I let that one go to Jake Peavy for use in his recording studio.
But not long after, I acquired this one and Ooh la la…this guitar is just as magical, honest!!
This well-played and truly sensational sounding veteran is in very nice original condition and even sports the original end pin and bridge pins. Kept professionally set up with action at 3/2 and proper string break across the bone saddle. There are some minor battle scars but No funny business sans a very old repaired back crack.
Ross Teigen Guitars performed an exquisite neck reset, re fret and replaced the original adjustable ceramic saddle with a tasteful Brazilian rosewood insert fitted with a proper intonated bone saddle, thus allowing a much more precise sound transmission. But rest assured, all hardware is kept in the case pocket and can easily be returned to the original adjustable saddle configuration if so desired.
For those not in the know…Texan’s are the slim fast neck “long scale” (25.5″) (1 5/8″ nut) version of the iconic round shoulder Gibson J45/J50 inspired Country Western model (parallelogram fret markers).

Engineered to be very powerful and outstanding sounding guitars.
I will sadly miss this one.
