C. F. Martin 0-18 – Ol’ 55
1955 C. F. Martin 0-18 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 141744, natural finish, mahogany back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and bridge. I call her Ol’ 55 after the Tom Waits song…
This is one of my personal birth year guitars which I find and save from time to time as a gift to myself. A perfect smaller Martin for all you couch potato pickers like me. I acquired this one from a pawn shop and my luthier David Hatchard did all the necessary work, neck reset, new frets, some minor crack repairs, new bone saddle and a fabulous set up with 3-2 action at the 12th fret. Plays like a dream without much effort and the slightest touch delivers a nice punch with bright and woody tones. This is an exceptionally fine sounding 0-size guitar for this period, with a richer and more expansive tone than many we’ve played.
Overall length is 38 5/8″ , 13 5/8 in” wide at lower bout and 4 1/8″ depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4″. Width at the nut is 1 11/16″. Nice clean original bridge plate.
There is a very small area of belt-buckle rash on the back and a few little scrapes, scratches and nicks on the top and some of that nice aged honest pick rash to let you know it’s been loved. Otherwise sans our repairs it’s in all original condition.
Overall a very nice well set up great sounding player.
