1949 Gibson LG-3
The model LG-3 is the top of Gibson’s original LG series. As the catalog described … “same general specifications as the LG-2 but a special selection of woods is used”. The natural finish shows off the X braced spruce top and lightly stained mahogany body. These were priced higher than a LG-2 when new making an LG-3 more rare to find these days.
Features and FON date this example to the late 1940’s, with the desirable small rectangle bridge and small pick guard. Note the tapered headstock and open-back Kluson tuners as well.
Proper storage and climate has kept this LG-3 safe from typical problems. Our internal inspection showed original braces and bridge plate all tightly glued with nothing loose or molested.
The top is flat with no belly. What appears to be a tight 2 inch hairline or possibly a scratch on the side can’t be felt or seen from inside of the guitar. The top and back are completely crack free.
The completely original condition of this guitar required only routine maintenance: neck reset, light fret dress, and new bone saddle. We replaced the crumbled tuner buttons with Willi Henkes Antique Acoustics reproductions. Even the bridge pins and nylon nut are original. All work expertly performed by David Hatchard of Exeter New Hampshire which included a pro set up with the action set at 4/32″ bass and 3/32″ treble with perfect intonation and plenty of saddle to lower further if desired.
The C shaped neck with a medium-full profile and 1 11/16″ nut width is easy to play. This LG-3 responds well to strumming, producing surprising volume. Finger style play offers up a sweet, woody tone.
This example is one of the cleanest most original vintage flat tops you are likely to find.
